Between January and June 1999, the French Pharmacists' health education committee (now Cespharm) conducted a survey on follow-up of asthma patients at fifty one pharmacies, with help from students in their sixth year of pharmaceutical studies.
During this program, the pharmacists held two or three educational interviews to evaluate and, if necessary, correct the patient’s inhalation technique as well as providing them with necessary information on asthma and its treatment. Carried out over six months with seventy-nine asthmatic patients, this program significantly improved the patients’ understanding of asthma and their performance in taking their treatment (eg inhalation technique). The data emphasizes the value of developing therapeutic education programs for asthmatic patients conducted by community pharmacists.
